Jesus’ actions at the last supper not only hold significance in their immediate context, but they also serve as an explanation and unpacking of what is about to come.

Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying:  – Matthew 5:1-2

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:3 

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. – Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. – Matthew 5:7
